Cleaning Hacks: How to Remove Wax from Table Linens

Candles can add a warm, inviting glow to any event, but they can also leave behind unwelcome wax stains on your table linens. In this guide, we'll show you how to remove wax from table linens easily, keeping your event decor looking its best.

Common Spill Triggers: What Leads to Candle Wax on Linens

Candles are dependable decor elements that enhance any space with their warm, flickering glow. Their presence is crucial for a wide range of occasions, including wedding ceremonies and reception dinners.

Despite their appeal, some difficulties might emerge. Guests may accidentally knock or bump candles, spilling wax across the tablecloths. These accidents may dampen the radiance of your occasion, leaving an unpleasant remnant on your linens.

Furthermore, outdoor gatherings, such as backyard weddings or raucous BBQ parties, pose issues. The whims of the wind or uneven ground may cause candles to tumble and wax to drip into your linens. Despite your best efforts, these mishaps are an unpleasant aspect of organizing an event.

Best Ways to Remove Wax from Your Linens

While taking proactive steps to avoid candle wax spills is impressive, accidents can still occur, staining cherished tablecloths. Here are three tried-and-true methods for removing wax from table linens:

Freezing Method

Place the linen in the freezer for 20–30 minutes. Once the wax has hardened, carefully scrape out the excess with a dull knife, the edge of a credit card, or a spoon. Be gentle so as not to damage the tablecloth's fibers. Wash the linen as usual, following the care instructions.

Heating Method

Place the tablecloth on a flat surface and cover the wax stain with a few layers of paper towels or a clean brown paper bag. Set your iron to a low or warm setting, and gently press it against the wax-covered surface. Move the iron in a circular or back-and-forth motion for 10-15 seconds. The heat from the iron melts the wax, which is then absorbed into the paper.

Lift the paper to see if the wax has transferred onto it, then repeat the process until no more residue remains. If necessary, replace the paper with new ones and repeat the process until all of the remaining wax is removed.

Removing Candle Wax with Boiling Water

First, ensure that the fabric is heat resistant. Then, carefully soak the stained part of the linen in boiling water to melt the wax. You can also pour hot water on the wax stain. As the wax melt dissolves, it will float to the top of the water.

Safety Precautions: When handling boiling water, use heat-resistant gloves or tongs to protect your hands from burns. Make sure that the area around you is clear to prevent any accidental spills. If you're pouring hot water, do so slowly and steadily to avoid splashing.

Remove your linen carefully. While it is still damp, dab the area with another clean cloth or paper towel to remove any remaining stain. If the water becomes too cloudy from melted wax, replace it with fresh boiling water and repeat until the wax is completely removed.

After removing the excess wax, wash the tablecloth according to the care instructions. Before placing it in the dryer, ensure you've removed all residues.
