If you don’t clean them right, they can lose their fuzzy feeling and can look dull. The good news is that keeping your velvet event linens looking amazing is easier than you think. With a few simple cleaning tips, your velvet tablecloths and chair covers can stay beautiful for years to come.

Understanding Velvet Fabric

Velvet 132" Round Tablecloth - Terracotta

Velvet tablecloths and chair covers feel so fancy because of the special way they're made!  Unlike regular cloth, velvet has a fuzzy pile – that's the soft part that feels so nice to touch.

This pile is made from tiny threads, kind of like miniature fur, that stand up straight on the fabric.  These threads can be made from different materials, like soft stuff called silk, or even tougher materials like cotton or polyester. No matter what the threads are made of, the fuzzy pile of velvet is delicate and needs gentle cleaning to keep it looking its best.

Essential Cleaning Supplies If You Want To Know How To Clean Velvet

Cleaning velvet can be tricky because of its delicate material and finish. But if you have the proper materials, doing this task should be a walk in the park. Here are some of the materials you will need if you want to know the best way to clean a couch, tablecloth, linens, and other items with a velvet finish:

  1. Super Soft Brush: Just like how to clean a sofa, using a super soft brush with gentle bristles will be a great way to clean velvet without hurting the fuzzy bits on the material. It helps pick up dust and dirt that are dry.
  2. Lint Roller: Like a sticky tape picker-upper! A lint roller grabs any fuzz, pet hair, or little strings that stick to the velvet.
  3. Soft Cloths: These cloths are super soft and won't snag on the fuzz. You can use them to wipe up spills.
  4. Soapy Water: If there's a tough stain, you might need a little bit of dish soap mixed with water. But be careful, we'll talk more about that later!
  5. Cool Water: Hot water can hurt the velvet, so always use cool water for cleaning.
  6. Spray Bottle: If you use soapy water, a spray bottle can help you put it on the stain gently.

Cleaning Methods for Velvet Event Linens

Velvet linens look so fancy because of the fuzzy part, called the pile. But that pile can trap dust and dirt easily. Here's how to keep your velvet happy with a quick cleaning routine:

Dealing With Light Dust and Dirt

Grab your super soft brush and brush the velvet in the direction the fuzz goes (it usually looks like one way the fur is laying). This helps loosen up any dust or dirt stuck in the fuzz.

Otherwise, if you see any stubborn fuzz, pet hair, or little threads? Your lint roller is here to save the day! Roll it back and forth to pick up anything sticking to the velvet.

Dealing with Tough Stains

Spills happen! But don't panic if you want to know how to clean velvet chairs, tablecloths, or chair covers, here's how to deal with them:

1. Blot

Rubbing a stain can spread it and make it worse. Instead, grab a clean, absorbent cloth (like a paper towel or dishcloth) and gently press it down on the spill to soak it up.

2. Soap Solution

For tougher stains that won't budge with blotting, we can bring in a mild dish soap solution. Just remember that a little goes a long way when dealing with velvet.

All you need to do is mix a few drops of the solution with cool water and place it in a spray bottle. Spray them over the fabric and wait a few seconds before jumping to the next step.

3. Be Gentle

Take a clean microfiber cloth and dampen it with your soap solution. Gently blot the stain with the damp cloth, working from the outside of the stain towards the center to avoid spreading it.

4. Clean Rinse

Once the stain is gone, you don't want any soapy residue left behind. Dampen another clean microfiber cloth with cool water only and blot the area to rinse away any soap.

5. Air Dry

Let your velvet linens air dry completely before using them again. Don't put them in the dryer or direct sunlight, as that can damage the fabric.

Deep Cleaning

If the stains are still there, there is a possibility that a deep cleaning will do the trick. Learning how to wash velvet may be tricky, so we suggest you let the professionals do this task for you.

This may be an optional step but is a great way to get rid of tough stains, especially on heavily soiled velvet linens.

General Care Tips for Velvet Event Linens

  1. Store them in a cool and dry place. Because of the delicate material, keep the velvet fabric away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
  2. Avoid harsh chemicals when dealing with velvet. As much as possible avoid bleach or abrasive cleaners that may be harmful to velvet fibers.
  3. Test before applying. If these harsh chemicals are all you have, try out the solution on an inconspicuous area before applying it to your linens.
