How To Secure Tablecloths To A Table Without Clips

A well-laid table instantly makes any event feel more put together. But keeping your tablecloth neatly in place can sometimes be tricky, especially outdoors where wind or movement can shift things around. While table clips are the go-to solution for many events, they aren’t your only option.

If you want to keep your tablecloth secure without using clips, there are other easy and effective methods you can try. Here’s how to do it.

1. Use a Fitted Tablecloth

One of the easiest solutions is to start with a fitted tablecloth. These are designed with elastic or tailored corners that hug the edges of the table, similar to how a fitted sheet fits on a mattress.

Fitted tablecloths are great because they stay snugly in place without any additional hardware. They are a popular choice for outdoor events, buffets, and even vendor booths where tables may be bumped or moved frequently.

2. Add Some Weight

Another way to keep your tablecloth from shifting is by adding weight to it. You can place decorative items like vases, candle holders, or centerpieces strategically to weigh down the fabric. Heavier linens like table skirts can also add an extra layer of weight around the sides, helping keep everything anchored.

For breezy outdoor setups, you might even tuck small weights under the corners of the tablecloth to hold it down subtly without being seen.

3. Tie the Corners

If you are working with a lightweight or oversized tablecloth, tying the corners underneath the table is a simple and fast fix. Gather each corner, twist the fabric, and tie a small knot or secure it with ribbon or twine under the table.

This method keeps the tablecloth tight and adds a casual, rustic look to your setup. It’s a great trick for backyard parties, casual weddings, or picnic-style events.

4. Use Non-Slip Liners

Placing a non-slip mat or liner between the table and the cloth can prevent sliding without needing clips. These liners are inexpensive and available at most home or party supply stores.

A non-slip surface grips the tablecloth from underneath, which is especially helpful when serving food or when guests are moving plates and glasses around. It is a simple solution that works with most tablecloths and sizes.

5. Wrap and Secure with Chair Covers

Another creative way to stabilize your table setup is by strategically using chair covers. If you are setting up banquet tables with chairs on either side, you can tuck part of the tablecloth underneath the seats or between chair backs. This trick holds the cloth firmly while still looking neat and intentional.

It’s subtle enough that guests won’t notice, but it keeps everything in place even when there’s a lot of movement around the table.

While table clips are always a reliable option, these alternatives offer flexibility when clips are unavailable or not ideal for your setting. A secure tablecloth sets the stage for a polished event, no matter how big or small the gathering may be.
